Aging is not rocket science. We go to sleep at night and, gods willing, wake up in the morning, and voilà we are another day older. But the question for me is, How do I want to age? Am I here for a good time, not a long time? Do I want modern science to keep me alive as long as possible? Do I want to take what life serves up without much thought on the matter?
The answer I think is that I want to enter this golden age with a certain amount of vigour, optimism and style – in other words, brio. I want to be young in spirit for as long as possible, while keeping the container it is housed in as healthy as possible.
My father lived to 92. He challenged my understanding of aging. He was independent, social, interested in the world, and young at heart. He gave me something to aspire to. I also observed his challenges and asked myself, Are there things within my control I can do proactively to lessen these issues?
I’ve decided on six categories that I believe have a big impact on longevity:
- Fuel – what we eat
- Activate – how we move, keep fit and stay active
- Interact – our social connections
- Believe – spirituality, philosophy and how we connect with the natural world
- Monitor – a look at wellness, and the proactive management of our physical health.
- Fund – the financial decisions we make to secure our retirement
The golden years are to be celebrated. As I research, learn, discuss and theorise on aging I’d like to start a conversation with you to see what we can all learn about longevity.
